Abstract—Consideration is given to conceptual principles of remediation of groundwater in old, contaminated
areas. Particular emphasis is placed on processes of natural self-purification that offer the most realistic prom-
ises for restoring the quality of contaminated water. As typical practical examples, results that were obtained
during studies in the area of oil producing fields in southeastern Tatarstan, as well as on the Lake Karachai site
of storage of radioactive wastes in southern Ural, are analyzed.
